Officer and Hailey – And Their Challenge to Get Along

March 26, 2018 by Lynn Schuster Leave a Comment

People often ask me if I have animals, and yes, I do. My husband, Paul and I live in a small house with two cats, Hailey and Officer. I also have a horse named Boo. He does not live with us, he lives on a farm with my sister, but I will save his story for a different post.

My husband and I often refer to our cats as “his and hers”. Our female cat, Hailey spends most of her time with me, and Officer, our male cat prefers Paul’s company. This makes perfect sense since I picked out Hailey and Paul was drawn to Officer. Both cats are rescues from our local Humane Society. Of the two of them, Hailey has been living with us for a longer period of time than Officer….but that’s a different story too.

For the most part, Officer and Hailey get along. More often than not, they eat together, they go outside together, they sit in the backyard together, they come back in the house together… generally speaking, the four of us live together in peace and harmony.
But, there are occasional times when the cats fight.
Before bedtime, Paul and I like to get comfy on the sofa, recline back and watch a movie with our “his and hers” cats. Hailey sits on my lap and Officer sprawls out on Paul’s lap. All is well most nights, but sometimes the energy shifts between the two cats and a fight ensues. Yep, the screaming, rolling, fur flying kind of fights.
There is another time when Hailey and Officer have words with each other and that’s at Bedtime. When Officer moved into our house, he decided that our bed was his bed. For quite a few years, Hailey has been fine with that and has not asked to sleep in our room. But recently, she comes upstairs and Officer will have none of it, he chases her away.
As a Telepathic Animal Communicator, you might be thinking that I could, well,  just talk to them. I talk to our cats about many things, but for this, I am too emotionally involved. With my own cats, I am not always the best mediator. I love them, and I hate it when they fight. Another thing I know about me, is that to be an effective communicator, I must remain in a neutral position with no attachment to the outcome. In this case, I definitely have an outcome in mind, stop fighting! So can you see my predicament? I am a Telepathic Animal Communicator and I am ineffective at helping my own cats find a peaceful solution to their dilemma.
In looking for a solution, I remembered that I have an apprentice! Lily is incredibly talented and tuned-in so I asked her to talk to Officer and Hailey. As an apprentice, she is looking for more experience talking to animals, and I need someone who is not emotionally involved. Lily gains experience, wisdom, and validation and I receive the gift of someone who can get through to Officer and Hailey in a firm yet gentle fashion. It’s a win-win situation for both of us!
Lily told Officer that he was behaving terribly. She reminded him that he moved into our house after Hailey and that Hailey graciously accepted him and let him in the house when he showed up at our door seemingly homeless. Lily also informed Officer that he is not the owner of the bed. Instead, she suggested that Officer invite Hailey into his space. There is plenty of room on the bed for both of them.
Officer also told Lily that he likes Hailey and would like her to be his girlfriend. Lily giggled and disclosed to him that he is not a very smooth operator when it comes to wooing the ladies. He’s a little klutzy.  And his idea of “chasing” Hailey doesn’t seem to be working too well. That’s when Officer fell silent and told Lily, “He’d consider letting her on the bed.”
As for Hailey, Lily asked her to lighten up on Officer. Lily related to Hailey that Officer really likes her and could she possibly cut him some slack.
It’s now three weeks later. Four days after Lily talked to Officer and Hailey, Hailey began sleeping on the bed. Officer not only tolerates Hailey but he’s letting her sleep on our bed for the entire night. We are all getting a better night’s sleep. And for the most part, Officer and Hailey are getting along better. Hailey doesn’t tease him or make him feel quite so inadequate. They are both sleeping on the bed at the same time and THAT’S AMAZING. Both cats are shifting their attitudes to create a peaceful solution and Lily knew exactly how to handle the situation.
She got the attention of both Officer and Hailey, she counseled them on what would be in their best interest and told me exactly what Officer and Hailey told her. I am so grateful to be working with Lily, she’s amazing and talented! Thank you for talking to my cats for me, Lily!
