On Wednesdays, I go to Kurtz Corral to visit Boo, Izzy, and the rest of the horses in their herd. Sometimes I ride, but mostly, we have what I like to call, spa days. I bring my grooming supplies out to the large pasture, and one by one, horses walk up to me. I brush their manes and tails, rub their necks, clean their hooves, and if they want it, I share Reiki with them.
About three weeks ago, I gathered my supplies, put some “cookies” in my pocket (they especially like the molasses treats) and began my walk. There were four or five horses close to the water trough so I didn’t need to walk far. I was greeted by Trigger, Izzy, Lola and Barney. Even though they are a few of my “regulars” something seemed off. I brushed all of them, and on my way out of the ring, Lola walked up to me. Her soft blue eyes looked straight into mine. She held her gaze as she put her nose within inches of my face. With her nostrils close to mine, she breathed. I relaxed into the moment and stood there, mesmerized by her. I could feel her warm breath in my nostrils and as I breathed in, I could smell the sweetness of her.
Breathing with a horse is one of the most exquisite gifts that they can give. It is a sign of complete trust and love and Lola was letting me know that I was one of the herd. It felt like she was taking care of me. She definitely wanted to give me a gift and she wanted me to stay with her a little bit longer. It is an amazing feeling when a 1,500 pound animal wants to be that close to you.
I thanked Lola with all my heart for her gift. The breath is a miracle of life. It connects us and sustains us. Breathing with a horse is a very intimate experience. Lola and I were sharing the miracle of life itself. I could feel her exchange of energy as she was letting me know that she loves me. She let me know that I gave her courage. She was thanking me for soothing her and her friends.
What I did not know, was that around the corner of the barn, Big Dolly was living her last afternoon of this lifetime. She was laying down, her heart racing, and she could not get up. She could lift her neck off the ground, but she could not roll onto her belly, nor could she curl her legs in to get them underneath the bulk of her large body.
As I was moving to the corner of the barn, her human, Jimmy, met me. He was going to see if he could get her to stand up. The vet had been called, and in the meantime, if we could get her up and keep her on her feet, perhaps she could walk off whatever was ailing her. But she was too weak. It was her time to transition.
The majority of Big Dolly’s herd were standing close by. Her best friend, Jasmine was standing right next to her. Jasmine was guarding her friend. My heart filled with love and I could feel that I was connected to the entire herd.
I saw my horse, Boo standing not too far away, he was glad that I was there. He stared at me as I tuned into Big Dolly. I could see that the pasture was filled with angels. We were surrounded by White Light, the Light of Spirit. We were deeply connected to God and the angels. Big Dolly would not be alone, ever.
I knelt down next to Dolly, rubbed her neck, and told her everything would be alright. I told Big Dolly that I would stay with her as long as I could. I told her verbally and telepathically that it was ok to go. I reminded her that her transition is the most important moment of her life and we would all celebrate her home.
I was very honored to be on the ground next to Dolly and I knew, too, that Jasmine would not step on me, we were all in this together. It was a very gentle experience. When I stood up, Jasmine took a few steps to get closer to me. I told Jasmine that she was doing a wonderful job watching over her friend and for the second time that day, a horse began breathing with me. Jasmine put her nostrils next to mine and we stood there, breathing with each other. I cherish the privilege of her trust and friendship. It is a moment I will never forget.
Big Dolly passed a few hours later as the sun set in the western sky. It was a brilliant sunset, filled with orange and magenta and just a few clouds.
Dolly was a huge draft horse. She loved her life at Kurtz’s. She loved to be around children, and she was my good friend. What an honor that day was, to be part of her soul’s passing, surrounded by angels and animals.
I was so fortunate to find Lynn last summer. My 12 year old Sasha was nearing the end of her days and I desperately wanted to ease her way. I found Lynn’s name on Penelope Smith’s directory. What a gift to both Sasha and I. Over several months until Sasha was put to sleep this past January, Lynn’s loving connection to my dog was magical and so very helpful. I learned many things about Sasha through her and in that way was able to be more understanding of her needs. Lynn’s rendering of her sessions with Sasha were spellbinding and worthy of a book as Lynn has such a beautiful gift of expressing herself.
I have continued to ask Lynn’s help with my other critters and she has always been receptive and amazingly accurate. Although I do not completely understand the energy of animal communication, I do not hesitate to recommend her gifts. They will ease your mind as well as your animal companion.
